Charlotte Mayor Supports Municipal ID for Undocumented Immigrants – immigration lawyers in Charlotte NC

On June 26, 2014 Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter told the Charlotte Immigrant Integration Task Force—a committee of Charlotte community leaders charged by the city council to develop a list of recommendations to help Charlotte “maximize immigrants’ economic and civic contributions to the city of Charlotte”—that he supported the idea of creating a municipal ID to help undocumented immigrants identify themselves in traffic stops and when picking their children up from school.

As the Charlotte Observer reports, Charlotte’s municipal ID program would follow the lead of cities across the country that have created similar IDs in order for local law enforcement to easily verify the identity of city residents. The Greensboro Police Department, for example, in an agreement with the local nonprofit Faith Action International House began accepting similar unofficial ID cards last summer. The primary purpose of the municipal ID program in Charlotte would be to make it easier for undocumented parents of Charlotte-Mecklenburg School children to identify themselves when picking their children up from school, a task with which many undocumented immigrants report having difficulty. The Immigrant Integration Task Force plans to publicly release its full list of recommendations sometime in the first half of 2015.

The proposed ID card, which would mainly help undocumented immigrants who are currently unable to obtain state driver’s licenses or ID cards under state law, has sparked intense debate between immigrant rights advocates and anti-immigrant groups. On July 7, 2014, Charlotte Immigration Law Firm attorney Benjamin Snyder was asked to comment on the proposed Charlotte municipal ID for Charlotte’s CW affiliate, WCCB Channel 18. Snyder provided his legal insight regarding how and if the proposed municipal ID might affect city residents’ immigration status. The segment aired on WCCB’s 10 o’clock news on July 7, 2014.
